Elements & Principles of Design at Work

Special Thanks:
The elements and principles of design are put to work in the livingroom of George Nash's Dallas Apartment.

Key elements of design used in this space are line, shape, color and light. The strong horizontal line of the space help to create a calm atmosphere, perfect for relaxing in a livingroom. The horizontal line is repeated in the space with the wall, window, sofa back and cushions, coffee table, wood grain of the floor and shelves of the bookcase. Shapes used in the space are the rectangles and squares. Rectangles can be seen in the windows, bookshelf, sofa and side chair. Squares are more visible in the throw pillows and the coffee tables. There is a mostly neutral color scheme illuminated by natural lighting from the large windows behind the sofa. By using natural light with this neutral color scheme, Nash created a warm, inviting and relaxing space.

A few of the principles of design employed in this space are balance, rhythm and unity. Symmetrical balance is created by placing side tables with table lamps on either side of the sofa, using two coffee tables centered infront of the sofa and the pattern of throw pillows in both ends of the sofa. Also, the positioning of the furniture in relation to the bookcase and the windows creates a look of stability in this example of symmetrical balance. Asymetrical balance is formed by offsetting the lounge chair to the right of the sofa with a side chair and side table of the same visual wieght. Rhythm is created in the space by the repetition of horizontal lines and rectangles throughout the space. Alternation of colors in the throw pillows also helps to give the space rhythm. The neutral color scheme and repetition of horizontal lines help to create unity in the space.

The more I study the design principles and elements, the more I understand the reasons I love the spaces I do...because they are well designed.
